TIPS ON TREE CARE

We guarantee you fresh trees, which were not cut in our plantations until you ordered your tree. Apart from this, we cut our trees in the most biologically favourable phase of the lunar cycle.

Please take note of our tips for keeping your tree fresh, so that you can enjoy it for a long time:

  • After buying your tree, put it in a cool place, preferably out of doors.
  • Avoid direct sunshine, otherwise the tree will dry out too quickly.
  • Cut a slice about 2 cm thick off the foot of the tree.
  • Stand the tree in a bucket of water. You will see that the tree takes up about 5 litres of water through the fresh-cut end. This will keep it fresh longer.
  • Also use a hose or a watering can to sprinkle water from two or three times over all the needles or even the whole tree. The needles continually give off moisture, and are glad to receive some occasionally. Even when the tree is standing in its place indoors, it is a good idea to moisten the needles daily with a spray. For trees with a root ball, this is absolutely vital, if the trees are to take when planted outside.
  • Living trees with roots should not be kept in a warm room for more than 10 days.
  • Buy glycerine from the chemist and add it to the water bucket. Effect: the water will not freeze, and the tree will absorb it better.

How can you get the best out of your abies procera Christmas tree?

The abies procera, a noble fir variety, is a Christmas tree that will not drop its needles. It was produced in a tree nursery for Christmas trees run on environmentally friendly principles. This means that you can enjoy the advantages of a natural tree, without imposing a burden on the environment. A new tree is planted for every tree felled.

To get to know the best side of your abies procera Christmas tree, we recommend you always to keep your tree cool while it is indoors. If the tree is treated with care, it should be able to stay fresh for 3 weeks or more, so that you can enjoy its scent and the softness of its needles for a long time. Otherwise, the strong odour of a tree that is drying out can be unpleasant to many people.

So how do I get the best out of my tree?

1. Choose a Christmas tree stand that will hold your tree without having to damage it by sharpening the foot. A stand that can still contain over 2 litres of water after the tree is installed in it is recommended.

2. In winter, it is possible that your tree may be frozen. If so, allow it to thaw in an unheated room, such as a garage or cellar.

3. After leaving the tree to thaw for at least one day, you should cut about two centimetres off the foot. That enables the vessels in the tree to take up water again. The tree must be stood in water as soon as you have cut the slice off the end. For the next 24 hours, while the tree is recovering, room temperature should be between 5 and 15 degrees centigrade. You will be amazed at the quantity of water that the tree now absorbs!

4. Only now should you bring the tree into your living room. Make sure that the tree always has water available: as soon as there is no more water to absorb, the vessels close up, and they can only be opened again by cutting another slice off the stem. You should give the tree fresh water daily.

5. To improve water take-up, you can add something to the water to keep it fresh, as you do with cut flowers. You will find such products at your garden centre.

6. Your tree should be set up as far as possible from any heating. A room temperature between 19 and 22 degrees centigrade is best. Allow it to cool down at night.

As your tree is biodegradable, after the festive season, nature will put it to use and it will once again become part of the ecological cycle.

PRACTICAL HINTS ON CANDLES

To ensure even burning, the wick should stand upright. With thick candles, scatter a little salt round the wick.

Candles will not drip and will burn longer if they are kept in the freezer for a few hours before lighting, or are soaked in salt water for two hours and dried in the air.

Thin candles often break when being pushed on to a spike. Heat the spike before pushing the candle on to it.

If a candle does not fit into a candlestick or will not stand firmly in it, dip it in hot water and press it into the candlestick.

Decorative candles that have got dusty are best cleaned with alcohol or petrol and a piece of cotton wool. However, wait at least 10 minutes before lighting! Candlesticks on to which wax has dropped or which contain too much old wax can be left in the freezer for a few hours. After that, the wax can be easily removed.
